Fighting for diversity was a key theme at Our Lady’s Convent High School as Hackney MP Diane Abbott spoke to students about more than 30 years in politics.

As part of Black History Month, which is October, Ms Abbott held a question and answer session in which she spoke candidly on her struggles against discrimination.

Ms Abbott, who became the first black female MP when she was elected in Hackney North and Stoke Newington in 1987, also encouraged the girls to treat fellow women with respect throughout their careers.

Also celebrating diversity this month was Tyssen Community School, which saw staff, parents and students enjoying Caribbean food and reggae music from Noah Landale and the Raw Wire Band.

Head Jackie Benjamin said: “It was so lovely seeing so many people enjoying this cultural event and we hope to have lots more in the future.”
