Working to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds was the focus of Hackney MP Diane Abbott’s visit to Mossbourne Community Academy.

Ms Abbott spoke to students taking part in sessions run by education charity Action Tutoring on Friday, as well as hearing about their aspirations for the future and ideas on lowering the voting age.

The charity supports young people with their English and maths studies through tuition, which is delivered by volunteers.

Each week about 16 pupils stay behind for an hour after school to receive this extra support, helping them tackle any areas they’re finding challenging and work through methods to prepare them for their GCSE exams next year.

“It was a pleasure to visit the pupils at Mossbourne,” the shadow home secretary said. “The pupils obviously appreciated the input from the charity.”
