Latest GCSE results from Hackney schools and photos of students celebrating across the borough

Students at schools across Hackney chalked up their schools’ best-ever marks yesterday (Tuesday).

Provisional results show that Hackney is above the national average for the second year in a row, with around 55 per cent of students achieving five or more GCSEs (including English and Maths) at A* to C, compared to 52 per cent last year.

Our Lady’s Convent High School, Clapton Girls’ Technology School, Haggerston School and Hackney Free and Parochial Church of England Secondary School all saw their students score record results.

Results have improved markedly over the last two years at Hackney Free and Parochial in Paragon Road, Hackney Central, with 54 per cent of students achieving five or more GCSE grades at A* to C and 42 per cent including English and maths in those five.

Head teacher Richard Brown said: “These are the best GCSE results in the school’s history. The number of children passing five GCSEs including English and maths has doubled in the last two years.”

Our Lady’s Convent RC High School in Amhurst Park also saw its best ever set of results with 71 per cent of its 118 GCSE students gaining the crucial five or more A* to C grades including Maths and English and an overall pass rate of almost 100 per cent.

Students at Clapton Girls’ Technology College, Laura Place, Lower Clapton Road were celebrating as 60 per cent achieved five or more GCSEs including English and Maths at A* to C, compared to 47 per cent last year, despite the distraction of recent refurbishments.

And Haggerston School in Weymouth Terrace also saw a big leap in the achievements, with 56 per cent of its year 11 students gaining at least five GCSEs including English and Maths at A* to C, compared to 49 per cent last year.

Results so far show half of students at Stoke Newington School in Clissold Road got five A*-C grades including Maths and English.

Almost a thirst of students got three or more A or A* grades, including Rachel Goldblatt who picked up eight A*s and 4 A grades, Alex Walker who got five A * and five A grades and Sophie Chatowa who got five A*s and six A grades.

Year 10 pupils at The Petchey Academy in Shacklewell Lane will be starting their year of school in September with a host of GCSEs already under their belt.

Eighty percent of the students – who will be the school’s first year 11s - achieved a GCSE grade between A* and C in at least one subject when they took their exams a year early.

But others including Meir Touitou, 15, did not stop there. Meir scored A* grades in Biology, Chemistry and Religious Studies, as well as As in Geography and History and even an A in AS level Maths.

Founding principal David Daniels, who retires on Tuesday (August 31), said the achievements of the current Year 10 so far were a credit to the commitment of all the staff, and provided “a fitting commentary to the inspiration of our patron, Jack Petchey and his foundation, in putting faith in the capability of young people of Shacklewell, who for many years had underachieved in this part of Hackney.”

The Mossbourne Community Academy in Downs Park Road scored astounding results last year as 86 per cent of its first set of GCSE students scored five or more A* to Cs, including English and Maths.

This year saw a slight dip to 82 per cent before appeals. But Principal Sir Michael Wilshaw said “We are delighted to break the 80 per cent barrier once again. It is fantastic for our students, many of whom will be returning to our sixth form.”

Results for Cardinal Pole RC School in Kenworthy Road, Homerton, and Skinners’ Company’s School for Girls in Stamford Hill are not yet available from The Learning Trust.
