A primary school held their school sports day at the Olympic Park to celebrate the opening of the park.
About 450 children at Gainsborough Community Primary School in Berkshire Road, Hackney Wick took part in the sports day at the Copper Box in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Headteacher Clare Pike said: “As a school we have embraced all the opportunities that the 2012 Games have brought to the school - Olympic ambassadors; being a part of the Opening Ceremony; and local art projects such as The Big Blue Fence being just a few.
“For several years the children have been learning about the Park and the Olympic Games and hearing about the Legacy. Finally it has come true. The children, from one of the most deprived parts of Hackney, have got direct access to an extraordinary park with world class sporting facilities on their door step. Our job is to make the legacy live for them, to show them how to access these superb venues and to live a healthy lifestyle.
“After the wonderful events of the 2012 Games, Gainsborough Community Primary School wanted to bottle the enthusiasm and joy felt across the nation and decided to launch a House System in the school with houses named after members of Team GB. Children earn house points for demonstrating the school values (which are also the Olympic Values) of excellence, respect and friendship.”
