Green-fingered students from Hackney Community College learnt about sustainable living last week by making an insect hotel and willow weaving.
The pupils from the Falkirk Street college in Hoxton braved the rain to complete a seven-week gardening and arts project where they also planted flowers and veg.
They Climate Change Youth Ambassadors volunteering project is run by environmental regeneration charity Groundwork London, and encourages 16 – 25 year olds to communicate their climate change and environmental concerns to their local communities.
Volunteer Nick Purdue said: “Over the past few weeks it’s been great to be outside and learn how to plant my own vegetables.
“I’ve been able to meet people that I’ve seen around College and work together on projects - we are planning to have a summer barbeque here on the roof-top so that the whole college can enjoy the products of our work.”
Groundwork London engages the volunteers to take part in workshops, inspirational visits and knowledge-building activities to learn more about climate change and sustainable living.
