A project to raise awareness about harmful practices such as female genital mutilation is being piloted at Hackney Community College.
Running the show is the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation (IKWRO), which provides support for women and girls from all middle eastern, north African and Afghan communities who are at risk of domestic violence.
So far more than 80 students have benefited from the project and plans are being made for it to be rolled out to other schools across the borough.
Teacher Siobhan Markwell said: “Working with my students on these materials led to so many shared stories and fantastic ideas about valuing and protecting our human rights.
“We all learnt a lot about the injustices that drive people from their homes and our respect for people who endure long and dangerous journeys to make new lives here in the UK grew enormously.”
