Almost 400 youngsters from 26 Hackney schools participated in one of London’s largest-ever bike rides for young people, with disco bikes and a couple of penny farthing riders adding to the carnival atmosphere.

The huge contingent of pupils took to the roads for the nine mile Bike Around the Borough ride on Thursday June 12 for the fourth consecutive year.

The idea behind the event, organised by Hackney Council and the Hackney Police safer transport team, is to teach children how to ride safely on the roads and demonstrate how fun healthy exercise and sustainable travel can be.

Starting at Clissold Park they passed through Hackney Downs continuing to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, where they watched a BMX display at the Olympic velodrome.
