The Gazette has been out and about today taking photos of youngsters who have dressed up to mark World Book Day.

The Magic Tree from Enid Blyton’s classic book, David Walliams’ Gangster Granny and his other character Mr Stink, were just a few of the characters that children from Queensbridge School in Haggerston picked to depict to celebrate the day celebrated in over 100 countries globally annually.

Rose Condon, deputy head at Queensbridge told the Gazette it’s been an amazing day there.

“There has been a huge buzz around the school with all the children so engaged and talking about books and it’s been a joy to see,” she said.

“The children absolutely loved dressing up and sharing their book ideas, we launched our new library and we did a class swap so the younger children came and shared books with the older children.”

The school also saw pupils dress up as the Demon Dentist, Cruella Deville from 101 Dalmations, Marsha from The Secret Garden, Katie Morag and a blue crayon from the story The Day The Crayons Quit, by Oliver Jeffers.

Ms Condon dressed up as the Iron Man, and head teacher Sarah Bailey came as Rupert the Bear.

World Book Day was designated by peace organisation UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) 16 years ago to celebrate books and reading.

Next week The Gazette will feature a spread of all the photos taken in schools around the borough today.
