Children made mud cakes, climbed trees and built dens at the launch of Hackney Forest School this weekend.
More than 400 people turned up to see TV handyman Tommy Walsh cut the ribbon on the new project, while MP Meg Hillier was also there fresh from her election win.
Forest schools started in Scandinavia giving children aged five to eight the chance to explore the natural environment in all weathers.
Hackney has been running a pilot project and will now roll out programmes throughout the year.
Georgia Norman, seven, is already sold after attending the trial, giving it “20 gold stars” in a review. She said: “My favourite thing about forest school is that we get to go out and play and have fires and eat marshmallows and it’s just really good for us.”

She encouraged others to join too, adding: “You should go to forest school because you can have some fresh air and you get to play everywhere in the forest.”
