Meg Hillier, MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch, was given a guided tour of a new Hackney school building by its pupils.
Head prefects Hannah Oladugba and Ferdos Daqiq, both 15, at the Hackney Free and Parochial Secondary School took the MP around the school’s new Watson building on September 14.
It forms part of an ongoing £17m Building Schools for the Future-funded rebuild of the school’s Paragon Road site.
Along with headteacher Richard Brown, they showed the MP the new classrooms used for Maths, Science and English among other subjects, as well as a new assembly hall.
The building also has an environmentally-friendly ‘brown’ roof which acts as a natural habitat for insects and other animals and pupils have used the new building since returning to school in September.
Ms Hillier commented on the cuts to other BSF-funded projects, saying: “Many of my MP colleagues have seen building programmes in their areas cancelled.’’
Further building work is scheduled to finish by the end of next year.
