Students at Nightingale Primary School are the bee’s knees after scooping a top prize at a national honey show.

Founded two years ago by maths teacher Renny Harrop – herself a qualified beekeeper – the school has two hives that the pupils work on.

The school’s bee club won the “beecraft” prize and was awarded the ‘rolt’ trophy for building three-dimensional wall displays showing the hives and the life cycle of its bees.

Speaking after the event, which was held at Sandown Park racecourse at the end of October, Renny said: “I really enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for bees with the children. The success of the bees’ future is their future.

“I would especially like to thank Organic and Natural in Lower Clapton Road, and The De Beauvoir Deli Co in Southgate Road for selling the bees’ surplus honey and enabling us to buy clothes and equipment for the children.”
