Dreams have become reality for pupils as a new playground is modelled on their visions for a perfect play area.

Pupils at St John of Jerusalem CofE Primary School in south Hackney got the chance to test out their new playground on Tuesday after a year-long project came to fruition.

It all started in early 2015 when pupils were asked by the school to draw what they would want in a new playground.

Deputy headteacher René Africa hopes this is just the first phase in the development.

She said: “The children are over the moon with it, not all classes are able to be on it at once so they want to know when it’s their turn.

“This is just the first phase, with more fundraising we are hoping to build a quiet area for children to relax and read books and then a space for Stage Two pupils.”

Hackney-based company Made From Scratch have been constructing the playground since last summer.

Mrs Africa believes the playground is something different for inner city London.

She added: “The old playground was really dull so we wanted to transform it to a place where children want to play.

“Inner city London school playgrounds normally just have grey and black tarmac so we wanted to create something that is interesting and different.”

The school are now looking to start fundraising for the next stage in the development of the playground and are willing to listen to any local business who would be interested in getting involved.
