Queensbridge Primary School has been getting creative to commemorate the lives of those who served in the Labour Corps in the First World War.

Thanks to funding delivered by the Big Ideas community interest company, students have been making commemorative wreaths and posters as part of the “unremembered project”. The project seeks to remember the 5,700 members buried or commemorated in the UK.

The Labour Corps built and maintained roads and railways and supplied the army with food, fuel and weapons.

Philippa Mapleston, Year 4 teacher and humanities co-ordinator, said: “The children have really enjoyed being involved in this meaningful remembrance project and it is wonderful for the younger community to be made more aware of the important contributions of the Labour Corps.

“The wreaths look amazing and everyone at the school has taken part in this community project.

“The Dalston CLR James Library will also be receiving one of our completed wreaths so the public can also see them.”
