Time is running out to have your say on a major development in Shoreditch Park before a final blueprint is put out by Hackney Council.

Plans due to be submitted next month would see Hoxton’s Britannia Leisure Centre demolished to make way for a secondary school, flats and a council-run sports hub.

City of London Academy Shoreditch Park, currently operating out of temporary accommodation in Haggerston Park, would be built on the site providing 900 secondary school spots and a 200-place sixth form.

The development will be partially funded by the sale of 400 luxury flats built on-site, while 81 affordable homes – made up of social rent and shared ownership accommodation – are also part of the plan.

There will also be early years facilities provided for Shoreditch Park Primary School in the base of one of the tower blocks, the tallest three of which will be 25 storeys high.

Cllr Anntoinette Bramble, deputy mayor and education chief, said: “It’s exciting to share more details about the school, which is a really important part of this project. So many parents of young children in the area have told me how relieved they are that their child will be able to go to an outstanding school near to where they live.

“This is about providing excellent quality school places for Hackney children, and we’re working closely with the school to make sure their permanent site provides them with the facilities they need to provide young people with a first class education.”

The school will also include sports facilities and performance rooms, which will be available for community use.

The project was given approval by the council’s cabinet in April last year, in the wake of protest from campaigning group Save Britannia Leisure Centre.

If planning permission is granted, work is expected to start on the school and the first block of flats, including all the affordable council housing, in summer 2019.

Architects working on the development will be running a series of drop-in events between 6pm and 8.30pm today at Colville Community Hall and a two-hour session at Shoreditch Park Primary School from 6pm.

Further drop-in sessions will be at the Britannia Leisure Centre between 6pm and 8.30pm on Thursday and Friday, as well as between 10.30am and 12.30pm on Saturday.
