An environmentally friendly scheme to make streets in Hackney safer for schoolchildren has been given the seal of approval by excited children.

Hackney Council’s ‘school streets’ initiative was launched on Monday, June 26, with St John the Baptist Primary School children taking advantage of Crondall Street now being a pedestrian and cyclist only zone between 8.30am to 9.15am and 3.15pm to 4pm during term time.

Headteacher Alyson Tyler said: “It’s a brilliant initiative as it cuts pollution, increases road safety and stops anti-social behaviour of drivers in our narrow road.”

People who live on Crondall Street will be able to enter and exit the street by car if their vehicle is registered. Non-registered vehicles entering during these times will be identified by camera and issued a fixed penalty notice.

The second pilot is set to be outside Tyssen Community School on Oldhill Street in Stamford Hill.
