Youngsters were amazed to learn how old organs really are, when St Paul’s Cathedral sent one to their school to launch an outreach project sharing their world famous music.
The children from St John the Baptist Primary School in Crondall Street were told that the instrument originated in Ancient Greece over 2,300 years ago.
Organist and educator Tom Daggett ran assemblies and workshops at the Hoxton school last Wednesday with an Allen digital organ.
He said: “We’re delighted to launch the project by working with St John the Baptist Primary - the school was recommended to us by the Hackney Music Service and the head teacher and staff were extremely enthusiastic from the word ‘go’.
“Caleb Hunter from year three came to St Paul’s on Lord Mayor’s Show Day, and was able to try the Grand Organ of St Paul’s.
“He played a piano piece very nicely, so it was great to see him in the audience in one of our school workshops.”
The inspiration for the OBE Organ Outreach project came from a new organ in the crypt at St Paul’s Cathedral funded by the Order of the British Empire, and the desire to share it with young audiences.
