Stoke Newington School is set to temporarily close as teachers strike over pay and working conditions.

Members of the NUT will be taking strike action on Wednesday, June 28, to apply pressure on governors to oppose cuts to funding and support staff who “allow support staff to do their jobs”.

Both the NUT and UNISON will be lobbying a meeting of the governors in an attempt to make them reject the proposals imposed upon them and to pledge their support to the Fair Funding for All Schools campaign – a grass roots parent-led group which sprung up in response to funding cuts.

Although Year 10 and 11 students were allowed to take their exams at the school, but several ‘creative activities’ were cancelled due to the strikes, which will be rescheduled for a later date.

Under the Conservative party’s manifesto pledge the Clissold Road school will be losing £1.28million by 2022, the equivalent of just over £1,000 less being spent on each pupil and the loss of 31 teachers.

Headteacher Annie Gammon said: “The decision to close the school or send pupils home is never taken lightly, but in this instance, where staff have elected to take lawful industrial action, I have no choice but to take appropriate steps.

“I am aware that school closures disrupt students’ education and inconvenience parents and carers: I do regret this.

“The very large majority of teaching staff at our school do belong to the NUT.”

Parents and staff – armed with placards – took part in a joint lobby of a the school’s governors’ meeting in May in the run up to the General Election.

A spokesman for the school’s NUT group said: “These cuts are unnecessary and premature.

“The government is now under huge pressure to increase school funding.”

Amidst the protest Ms Gammons has been at pains to stress that no teaching jobs are currently at risk and subjects are set to be cut at this stage.

In response to the lobbying, governors are consulting with staff internally on how best to spend school finances.

The body has also passed a motion in “strong support” of Parents Against Cuts.

The school will be opening as normal at 8.40am on Thursday, June 29.
