Pre-season friendly: Enfield Town 1 Tottenham Hotspur under-23s 2

Two goals from Marcus Edwards helped Tottenham Hotspur’s under-23s win 2-1 at Enfield Town last night.

Wayne Burnett took a fairly strong development squad to Donkey Lane and saw them triumph, but only thanks to a crucial late save by substitute goalkeeper Jonathan De Bie.

Spurs took the lead against the Bostik Premier club with 18 minutes played when Edwards scored from the penalty spot after he had been fouled by Josh Davison.

The hosts almost levelled before the break, but Jack Roles got back on the line to clear a header from Matt Johnson.

It remained 1-0 at half time and Spurs under-23 manager Burnett made a raft of changes with five different players coming on.

One of them, Paris Maghoma, tested Wright from range before another spot kick was won by Tottenham.

Edwards dribbled into the area and was brought down by Enfield’s goalkeeper, but he picked himself up and slotted home from 12-yards.

As the game entered its closing stages, the home side pushed for a way back into the game and De Bie had to block an effort from Billal Sayoud.

He was powerless to prevent Brandon Adams from reducing the deficit with 11 minutes left though, as the Enfield man drilled into the top corner from 20-yards.

Spurs responded positively, however, and Edwards came within a whisker of a hat-trick when his effort hit the crossbar while Troy Parrott fired wide from two decent openings.

In the second minute of stoppage time, the home side did create one last opportunity when the ball dropped for Jack Hockney, but Die Bie brilliantly saved to ensure the visitors claimed bragging rights over their fellow north Londoners.

Next up for Burnett’s development squad is a trip to France where they will look to defend the European under-21 tournament title they won in Ploufragan last summer.
