Spurs full-back plays his part as Young Lions beat Italy 3-1 to reach final of the competition for first time

Tottenham Hotspur’s Kyle Walker-Peters helped England create history this afternoon in the under-20 World Cup in South Korea.

The Spurs defender played the whole match, as Paul Simpson’s team defeated Italy 3-1 in the semi-finals of the competition.

It means England will face Venezuela in the final on Sunday and have the chance of winning the under-20 World Cup for the first time in their history.

England, without Tottenham’s Josh Onomah due to suspension, trailed early on after Riccardo Orsolini opened the scoring.

The Young Lions didn’t panic though, and pushed for an equaliser throughout the first half in South Korea.

Despite not levelling before the interval, England didn’t waste too much time after the restart, as Dominic Solanke made it 1-1 in the 66th minute.

Simpson’s team scented blood now and Ademola Lookman fired them in front from close range 11 minutes later.

Solanke completed his brace a minute from time to confirm history for England’s under-20s.

Walker-Peters impressed on the left side of the Young Lions back four and will now hope to start again in the final on Sunday.

England will also have Onomah available for the clash with Venezuela, which kicks-off at 11am, as they seek World Cup glory.

The Tottenham teenager was harshly sent off in the quarter-finals, but will aim to earn a starting berth at the weekend.

It is a remarkable achievement by Simpson and his squad, especially given how other Young Lions have fared in the competition previously.

England hadn’t won a game at the under-20 World Cup since 1997 before seeing off Argentina last month.

Now they have chalked off successes against South Korea, Costa Rica and of course Italy today.

One more victory on Sunday and Onomah and Walker-Peters will return to Spurs as World Cup winners.
