Closed portion of Amhurst Road in Hackney Central reopens to traffic

A central Hackney thoroughfare reopened to the public on Monday after it was closed for more than six weeks.
Scaffolding was removed over the weekend from Amhurst Road to allow traffic to return to both lanes. The portion of road between Mare Street and Brett Street was initially closed for two weeks from November 22 when a row of Victorian terraces backing on to the main footpath to Hackney Central station was found to be structurally unsafe. A one-way system has been in operation since December.
The council has been conducting hand-demolition work since then and this work is still on-going.
Consequently, the stretch of pavement running alongside the terraces between the entrance to Hackney on the junction of Mare Street and Amhurst Road to the car park in from of Hackney Central will remain closed in the mean-time. The council hope to open a temporary footpath next to the pavement in the next week.
Pedestrian access to Hackney Central Overground Station from Amhurst Road, near the junction with Mare Street was restored over the Christmas period.
