Spurs have been drawn away to West Ham United in the fourth round of the League Cup

Erik Lamela believes Spurs are among the favourites to win the League Cup, but has warned his team-mates they cannot become complacent.

Tottenham Hotspur are one of four top-six clubs left in the competition after the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United were knocked out in the third round last week.

Spurs face a tricky clash in the fourth round after they were drawn away to Premier League rivals West Ham United during the draw which took place on Saturday night.

Last season the Hammers knocked the Lilywhites out at the same stage following a 3-2 win at Wembley Stadium and Lamela doesn’t want a repeat.

He said: “Probably we are one of the favourites because Tottenham is a big team, but we need to play good.

“If we don’t play good, we can go out easily, so when we next play we need to play good and be focused and aggressive and try to win every game to get to the final.”

Given Mauricio Pochettino’s men are playing Man City on Monday October 29, the tie is likely to take place two days later, Wednesday October 31, on Halloween and it will be in the middle of a busy spell.

The Lilywhites are away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on November 3 in the league and entertain PSV in the Champions League on November 6, but this tournament is one Lamela wants to enjoy success in.

He played a big part in last Wednesday’s win over Watford at Stadium MK following a penalty shoot-out.

After Isaac Success opening the scoring, Lamela found Dele Alli inside the area and the captain for the night was fouled and scored to make it 1-1 after 81.

Five minutes later and the Argentinean netted his third goal of the season with a fine chipped effort to finish off a stunning counter-attack.

The Hornets levelled just before full time through Etienne Capoue’s deflected effort though, but Paulo Gazzaniga had the last laugh.

He saved penalties from Capoue and Domingos Quina while Heung-min Son, Lamela, Fernando Llorente and Alli scored to earn Tottenham a 4-2 shoot-out success in front of 23,650 supporters.

“All the trophies are important for us, so to keep in this competition is good,” Lamela said.

“We want to keep playing in this competition and keep fighting to try to win something until the end.”

The attacker was as an unused substitute during the 2-0 league victory at Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

But he has netted three times in four games since recovering from a muscle injury, he added: “I am trying to help the team when I have time to play.

“I try to enjoy it and the most important thing is the team won. Okay it was on penalties, but it keeps us in the competition.”
