Karen Hills’ team return to league action after having Sunday off and the mood in the camp is positive ahead of hosting the Hornets

Spurs Ladies take on Watford Ladies this evening in the FA Women’s Super League 2 and are hoping to achieve back-to-back victories in the division for the first time since October.

The Lilywhites won in a friendly match against Watford in November, however when they met in the league a month prior at Kings Langley FC, the opposition got a valuable point in what proved to be a very competitive encounter.

Since then Watford have had a change in management and have seen the arrival of several new players while others have departed.

Nevertheless, the Hornets may provide yet another challenge for Karen Hills’ side as they come up against some unfamiliar faces.

Ahead of the game, midfielder Maya Vio said: “I am confident we will bring the three points home, but not because Watford are 10th in the league.

“As a club, we go into each game with the same mentality and that is the ‘winning’ mentality which involves working hard for each other and never giving up.

“I am confident because I have confidence in our coaches on the side-lines and in the players around me. Whether we play the best team in the league or teams below us, this doesn’t change.”

Spurs may not have played on Sunday, but it was business as usual in training throughout the week for Vio and her team-mates as they prepare to play under the lights at Theobalds Lane on Thursday evening.

“We go into every game with the same preparation and mentality,” she commented.

“Knowing more about what you’re up against helps mentally prepare for the game and also adds more of a competitive edge to the match as you build off previous performances – both individually and as a team.

“We know not to be complacent with players, especially as this is a league where the quality of football is amazing.”

Hills’ side were triumphant in their previous game in the WSL 2 after they beat Oxford United 2-1 to move up to sixth place in the league and the result has given the team more belief as they look to build on the win, according to the midfielder.

“Winning on Sunday (11th February) has definitely given us a confidence boost which has been evident in training,” said Vio.

“There’s been a buzz all week and the morale is much higher. It’s key to have this as it just gives you this extra push so the team is definitely looking to bring another three points to continue the buzz.”

The match on Thursday will be the Lilywhite’s third game in a row at home this month and Vio has acknowledged the incredible support the club has received from the fans.

She is hopeful that the team can give them more to cheer about come this evening, she added: “The fans have been so amazing by supporting us week in and week out, even when it’s freezing cold.

“The team is rearing to go and put in a great performance at our home ground for the fans who deserve it.”
