The ground floor of a Stoke Newington restaurant has been damaged in a blaze caused by build up of fat residue in an extractor hood.
The London Fire Brigade was called just after 11am yestserday to the Aziziye Halal restaurant in Stoke Newington Road, which is underneath the Aziziye mosque.
It took 21 fire fighters using four fire engines an hour and a half to get the fire under control.
Investigators believe the fire was caused by flames from a charcoal grill igniting a build-up of fat residue in an extractor hood, ducting and filters.
A spokesman said: “Restaurant and take-away owners should always take care to make sure their extraction systems are kept clean as a build up of fat and grease can lead to a fire.”
