Fire crews tackled the blaze


A resident was led to safety from a flat above a blaze in a shop in Lower Clapton.

Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters were called out to tackle a fire at the shop at Chatsworth Road in Lower Clapton yesterday evening.

A Fire Brigade spokeswoman said : “The fire damaged part of the basement and fire crews wearing breathing apparatus led one person to safety down to the ground floor via an internal staircase.”

The man who is in his 50s was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Crews from Homerton, Leyton and Bow were called out at 6.47pm and had brought the fire under control by 7.30pm.

Experts are now investigating the cause of the fire.
