The fire broke out shortly before 10.35pm inside a Turkish restaurant in Kingsland High Street.
One man fled the three storey building, which includes flats above the restaurant, before fire engines arrived and was later taken to Homerton hospital suffering smoke inhalation.
The flames could have started in the venue’s air ducts, which were completely destroyed.
Further damage was caused the basement and ground floors.
About 25 firefighters worked to get the blaze under control by midnight. The smell of smoke reached as far as Stoke Newington.
Crews remained at the restaurant until 7am.
