Fire fighters are teaming up with estate agents to fit free smoke alarms for residents to help save lives.
Six out of ten people across the country who die in fires do not have smoke alarms fitted in their homes.
In Hackney 166 home-fires out of 310 in Hackney did not have the life saving devices.
Participating estate agents in the pilot programme run by fire crews at the Kingsland Road fire station will hand out referral forms for new tenants to arrange a home safety visit.
Residents will get a free smoke alarm and fire safety advice about their homes.
“It’s proactive fire safety,” said Kingsland fire station crew manager Marangos Stavros. “Every one less fire we have to attend means lives saved and fewer injuries.”
For a free smoke alarm and advice call the Home Fire Safety Advice line on 0800 0284428.
