A new ‘Mark’ promoting ethical business in Hackney has been awarded to the first 15 pioneering social enterprises to receive the honour.

Mayor Philip Glanville launched the scheme on Friday.

The brainchild of Hackney Co-operative Developments, the aim is to grow the social economy, and the Mark will act as a quality assurance to customers.

It will be given to social enterprises which can prove community-ownership, operation for social benefit, and investment of profit into social objectives.

The first 15 recipients include ALPHA Actors, Black Cat Cafe, Bootstrap Company, Cass and Claredale Halls of Residence Association Limited, Hackney Pirates Ship of Adventures, Hackney Playbus, Hackney Community Transport Group, Healthwatch Hackney, Liberation Foods CIC, Peter Bedford Housing Association, Pioneers Post, Shoreditch Trust, STORE School & Projects CIC, Urban MBA and the Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia Centre.
