The team behind Toast Ale – beer made from discarded bread – have announced they are to launch in the USA.

The company was founded by Hackney Brewery last year, with all profit from its drinks donated to charity Feedback.

The Toast Ale team, who no longer brew in Hackney, has now teamed up with the Chelsea Craft Brewing Company in New York to create an American pale ale.

And they are also set to release a craft lager and session IPA in the UK after a crowdfunder smashed its £20,000 target – raising £28,000.

Toast Ale is made with surplus bread from bakeries and delis across London that hasn’t been sold by closing time and would otherwise be thrown way. Tristram Stuart, founder of food waste charity Feedback, approached brewers Jon Swain and Peter Hills after spotting a similar process in Belgium.
