Work is underway to build four council homes in Stoke Newington as part of Hackney Council’s huge estate regeneration project.
The derelict housing block Aikin Court in Barbauld Road is to be flattened to make way for the social rent homes, and three private-sale ones.
It’s part of the town hall’s pledge to build 3,000 homes built at 18 sites in the borough.
Mayor Phil Glanville, who visited the site this week, said: “Locals have long campaigned for this derelict block to be demolished, so I’m delighted.
“In the absence of any government funding for social housing, we’re determined to do everything we can to build genuinely affordable homes for Hackney’s residents.

“Our city only works when the people who make its economy tick can afford to live and work here.”
Work is due to be completed next year.
