Hackney Council is appealing for donations of used and unwanted toys that will gifted to youngsters in hospital rather than ending up in landfill.

Collections will be held at libraries across the borough until January 31.

They will then be distributed to the charity Homerton Hope, as well as the London Community Rehabilitation Company law enforcement agency and children’s centres in Hackney.

Recycling chief Cllr Feryal Demirci said: “About 13 million toys end up in landfill sites each year, many of which are in perfectly good condition and can be given a new home. So instead of throwing away old toys to make way for new ones given over the festive season, donate them to our toy recycling scheme which will see them re-gifted to children. I hope many families are able to help not only help spread festive cheer this new year, but also help reduce our impact on the environment.”
