A group of heritage enthusiasts will embark on a walking tour of the NE postcode area – but not the one up north.

NE was the Hackney postcode until 1869, or 1917 for the more stubborn locals. It was merged with the E district to save money. And while today NE belongs to Newcastle, there are still signs in the borough with it on.

Sam Roberts, who leads the Ghost Signs phenomenon has teamed up with heritage group the Hackney Society to host a walking tour of the borough for a scavenger hunt to track them all down and map them.

“Our aim is to conduct a comprehensive survey of the signs,” said Sam. “The process will consist of dividing up the area we have identified into sections each team can survey.”

The hunt will run from 2pm to 5pm on April 21, with a group briefing at 2pm in the Clapton Hart pub in Lower Clapton Road. RSVP at ghostsigns.co.uk/NESigns.
