The town hall has been given £3.3million for restoration work at Springfield Park.

The money from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund will be spent on refurbishing the park’s 19th century buildings, upgrading footpaths, play equipment and gates and preserving the green space.

The stable block will become a space for small business and the derelict glass house will be transformed into a community space for private functions.

All the money made from hiring it out will be pumped back into improving the park, the council has said.

Park’s boss Cllr Feryal Demirci said: “We have carefully considered the ways we can generate income to pay for the maintenance of the park, whilst protecting the character and integrity of this much loved space for the next generation. The facilities will be a huge asset not only for this wonderful park but also the local area.”
