People in Hackney are being warned of a council tax scam operating in the borough.

Residents have received calls from a rogue worker pretenting to be from Hackney Council or the Treasury who tells them they are elligible for a council tax refund.

The caller asks for the residents’ bank account details and tells them they must make a ‘charitable donation’ via Western Union to receive the rebate.

Hackney’s council tax office usually notifies residents of any refunds in writing. The team do occasionally phone residents to discuss payment but would not require confirmation of details.

If you have any doubt about the call, take the caller’s name and extension number and call the council’s switchboard on 020 8356 3000 and ask for that extension number. Do not give out your personal banking details and contact the Council’s Trading Standards team immediately on 020 8356 4929.
