A narrow stretch of road outside a Stamford Hill primary school could be made one-way to stop drivers outrageously mounting the pavement to avoid traffic jams.
School-run cars may also be banned from Oldhill Street outside Tyssen Community School for 45 minutes at opening and closing times, in an effort to improve safety for kids and cut pollution.
A trial on the “school streets” scheme was pencilled in for September but was delayed after neighbours also called for the one-way measures to be brought in.
The council has today launched a consultation on both plans with a view to launching a nine-month trial in January.
The one-way system would be in place from Stamford Grove East to Feldman Close at all times and stop vehicles travelling towards Clapton Common, though cyclists will still be able to travel in both directions.
It is designed to stop people driving along the pavement outside Tyseen, like the idiots caught in the Gazette’s video earlier this year.
There have long been safety concerns for kids and regular instances of drivers squaring up to each other and the school streets scheme aims to tackle that.
The same stretch will therefore be pedestrian and cycle only from 8.30am to 9.15am and from 3.15pm to 4pm on school days. People who actually live or work there will still be allowed to come and go as they please, as will pedestrians and cyclists.
Hackney Council’s transport chief Cllr Feryal Demirci said: “Too many children in Hackney are driven to school. It’s bad for air quality and it’s bad for their health.
“School Streets is one thing we’re doing to try to make it safer and easier for children to walk and cycle to school – the shocking footage of cars driving on the pavement outside a primary school shows that there is still more to do.”
The school streets scheme is already in place outside St John the Baptist in Hoxton, while consultations have finished regarding Gayhurst Primary in Gayhurst Road, London Fields and Millfields Community in Hilsea Street, Lower Clapton.
