A Hackney employment charity has won lottery funding to continue its work with vulnerable people in east London’s migrant communities.

ELATT was awarded more than £300,000 to fund its East London People project which will provide mentoring and befriending services.

The scheme will also enable people to learn English and improve their self sufficiency. The charity has been working to tackle social inequality in the borough and surrounding areas for 30 years, providing people with the opportunity to learn skills which will improve their social and employment prospects.

Anthony Harmer, chief executive of ELATT said: “Migrants come to the UK for many reasons. Some are fleeing human rights abuses, some come to join their families and some are here in hope of establishing a better quality of life. Unfortunately many migrants face challenges and problems with settling in the UK.

“At ELATT we can help them overcome these challenges and with the support of the Lottery, we will be able to help some of the poorest families combat poverty and integrate into the UK.”
