Five years after opening as a pop-up, Hackney Flea Market has made a “natural progression” and opened its first shop.

The market, which launched in Abney Public Hall in Stoke Newington Church Street, has moved into Shacklewell Lane, Dalston, selling the works of local creatives who regularly exhibit at the quarterly DIY art and independent ceramics markets.

Flea market founder Mark Farhall says the permanent fixture is complementary to them, rather than a replacement. It opened last week with stock from up-and-coming graduates to established artists and independent publishers from east London including Print Club, Turning Earth and Glebe Road Studios. And Mark is already being sent packages from artists as far and wide as Canada, Serbia and Sweden, who want their products on the shelves.

“It’s going well,” he said. “The arts and ceramic markets are really popular and this was the natural progression, really. It was going to be a pop up but it’s now permanent.”

Mark is waiting to see if the arts and ceramics markets, and the flea market’s record fair, can continue at what was Epic in Stoke Newington Road, as it’s now part of the Hackney Arts Centre.
