Hackney foodbank is in desperate need of funding as it faces losing its warehouse while dealing with a record rise in users.

The bank has helped tens of thousands of people since opening four years ago, handing out 70 tonnes of food in the process.

It has been paying a reduced rate at St Mary’s Church in Church Street, Stoke Newington, but the site has now been sold and the team will have to leave the 18-tonne capacity warehouse.

The bad news adds to the existing pressures being faced by the foodbank caused by the record demand in the borough for supplies.

According to foodbank operators the Trussell Trust, last year 3,215 emergency food packages were handed out to people in Hackney – a 25 per cent rise year on year, dwarfing the London-wide increase of 5pc.

Now the foodbank needs to either raise thousands to pay for temporary space or find a warehouse to use free of charge. The funding drive will kick off with an art auction, live music and comedy event on June 29.

Liza Cucco, Hackney foodbank project manager, said: “2016 is a crunch year for us. We really need a big show of support from local people to help keep the project meeting the rising demand in the borough.

“Hackney’s poorest are struggling with the rising cost of living and cutbacks to vital services. We’re asking people to come along, buy a raffle ticket or two and get a great night of live music and comedy in return for helping a good cause.”

“We’re also searching for a new warehouse space and would appeal to any businesses or residents aware of suitable spaces to contact us.”

The fundraiser will take place at St Sepulchre’s Church in the Holborn Viaduct, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Tickets are £8 to £10 and can be bought here. Advance tickets can also be bought here.
