Hackney’s incoming mayor has created two additional cabinet posts and given himself a couple of advisors.

Philip Glanville announced his team at a meeting with Labour members last night and revealed four back-bench councillors would be promoted to the top table.

The new faces are Cllr Jon Burke, who will take on sustainability, Cllr Caroline Selman, who has been given safety and enforcement, Cllr Carole Williams, who will handle employment and Cllr Clayeon McKenzie, who has been tasked with taking over from the mayor on housing issues.

Cabinet members get just under £34,000 in allowances while the deputy mayor takes home £40,000. As top dog mayor Glanville pockets £79,000 a year.

Following the announcement, he said: “Hackney is one of the most diverse boroughs in the country, and I’m proud to have appointed a cabinet which reflects that diversity.

“There’s a wealth of talent and experience in Hackney, so I’ve created a mixture of positions to ensure those who are unable to take on a full time post are still able to bring those skills to the table.

“The slight increase in size reflects the challenges facing the borough over the coming years.

“For example, it will allow for greater focus on sustainability, apprenticeships, employment and skills and create more opportunities for volunteering and engagement. This will prevent homelessness and housing issues such as the affordability of private rented accommodation.

“There are some huge challenges ahead, and I’m looking forward to working with my new team towards our ambition of making Hackney a place where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.”

Philip, a Hoxton councillor for 10 years, will create a company within the town hall that allows it to offer private tenancy as he focuses on making Hackney the first borough to build 500 homes at Sadiq Khan’s London Living Rent. Under the two-year scheme, tenants will pay no more than a third of their income on rent.

He’s also pledged to double the number of council homes built in that time.

To help him deliver his promises, he has appointed two mayoral advisors, Cllr Rebecca Rennison for preventing homelessness and Cllr Sem Moema for private renting and housing affordability.

Some of the existing members will have slightly different portfolios. Cllr Antoinette Bramble has been appointed deputy mayor but will continue in her role as children’s services boss. Cllr Jonathan McShane’s portfolio is now health, social care and devolution. Cllr Feryal Demirci is now boss of neighbourhoods, transport and parks and Cllr Guy Nicholson is now in charge of planning, business and investment.

Cllr Geoff Taylor remains finance boss.
