Sleep-deprived neighbours who live next to Ash Grove Garage are calling for its closure after being kept up by queues of noisy buses until the early hours.

Six weeks ago operators Arriva and Hackney Community Transport began using the station’s back entrance at night.

People in Beck Road, Sheep Lane, Alden House and Broadway House say they haven’t got a wink of sleep since because of the beeping horns, engine noise and arguments with car drivers who find the road blocked.

Graham Cadogan said: “Each night from 1am to 3am, there is a queue of 30 to 40 buses that have made out lives hell. We have not had an undisturbed night’s sleep.

“Ash Grove Garage should be closed down. It has outgrown itself and there are too many buses there.

“They are pumping out toxic emissions, not to mention the noise pollution.

“Surely they are breaking by-laws on a nightly basis?”

Three years ago the Gazette reported that neighbours in a new block of flats at the front of the station, off Mare Street, were unable to sleep because of the same problem.

Resident and film director Dan Smith even made a film to highlight the problem of buses idling their engines and honking their horns throughout the night.

TfL, which owns the garage, could not confirm why the problem had suddenly resurfaced, this time for neighbours at the back.

But in a statement, senior commercial development manager Tom Cunnington apologised and said he was “confident” the issues would soon be addressed.

He said: “We and the bus operators, Arriva and CT Plus, understand the need to be good neighbours and minimise disruption to local residents, including reducing instances of engine idling.”
