Hackney pupils from the closest primary school to the Olympic Park formed the figure ‘500’ to mark the number of days until the start of the 2012 Games.

Children aged nine to 11 from Gainsborough Primary School in Berkshire Road, Hackney Wick, which overlooks the International Press and Broadcast Centres, took part in the countdown celebrations as tickets went on sale.

Mayor of Hackney, Jules Pipe, said: “With 500 days to go until the Games comes to town, Hackney is ready to welcome the millions of visitors who will enjoy this sporting spectacle.

“But as a council our priority is to secure the best possible legacy - including jobs for local people, better public transport, a new neighbourhood in the east of the borough, and a better environment.”

Hackney residents can apply for tickets for the London 2012 Olympic Games at www.tickets.london2012.com until 26 April.
