Hackney is remembering those who suffered under the Nazis during World War II and in subsequent genocides as part of International Holocaust Memorial Day today.
The global memorial day will also mark the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp.
A commemoration ceremony will be held at 10am at Hackney Town Hall in Mare Street. It will be led by the Speaker of Hackney cllr Michael Desmond who will later place a floral tribute next to the memorial in the Town Hall square in honour of those who suffered. Hackney MP Meg Hillier will also be attending.
Cllr Desmond said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity to reflect on these terrible events, to show solidarity with survivors and sympathy for victims in order to ensure that past evils are not forgotten or repeated.”
