Hackney residents encouraged to plan street parties this summer

PUBLISHED: 14:07 10 April 2012

Red tape has been ripped away from regulations governing public gatherings, and Hackney's residents intend to make the most of the bureaucratic relaxation with a host of street parties this summer.

Some residents are already busy planning their bashes to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee in June or the Olympics and Paralympics, which are being hosted by the borough in August.

Linda Wilson, chairwoman of the Tenants and Residents Association at Tower Gardens Estate in Clapton, said: “We’re definitely going to have a street party for the jubilee, and we’re going to have a meeting to get all the details sorted out soon.

“We’re thinking about having fancy dress for the kids, and maybe a competition for the best hat. And we’ll have tables with sandwiches and cakes and all the usual party food too.

“We’re really looking forward to it.”

Hackney Council is making it easier for residents to host their own street parties by launching a new guide on its website containing all the advice they’ll need to plan a bash.

Organisers won’t need council permission for small parties – defined as events with fewer than 200 guests – or any special insurance, but if they want to close a road for the party they will need to apply to the council. Road closures are free.

Information on the website includes rules that must be followed, and advice on issues such as health and safety and hygiene.

Guidelines are also available for those who want to host a large event, for more than 200 guests, or a commercial event in the borough.

Mayor of Hackney, Jules Pipe, said: “Street parties provide a great opportunity for neighbourhoods to come together.

“We encourage these events and want to make it as easy as possible for our residents to organise and enjoy such celebrations.”
