Hackney's 17-year old up and coming superstar Jermain Jackman is down to the final three candidates in a prestigious musical award.

Jermain won first place this summer in the international singing Competition ‘Hackney versus Harlem’, staged at the Hackney Empire.

The singer-songwriter appeared in the Radio 1 Hackney Weekend Concert opening song with Leona Lewis in June.

He has now beat off 4,000 hopefuls to be shortlisted for a Spirit of London Award (SOLA) for musical achievement.

SOLA is run by the Damilola Taylor Trust and aims to shine a spotlight on young people who are making a positive difference in their communities.

Jermain who was a member of the Hackney Youth Parliament, has campaigned against knife crime, and for better communication between young people and the police.

He has also received a National Citizen Service Award from PM David Cameron.

The winner will be chosen by industry and celebrity panellists, and the winners of all 10 SOLA categories will be announced at an awards ceremony on December 10 at the O2 Arena in Greenwich.
