The majority of ticket offices at London Overground stations in Hackney could be saved from closure.
London Travelwatch (LTW) has been consulting on the proposals from Arriva Rail London to close the front desks at 11 stations in the borough. Rail chiefs say the move will “represent an improvement on current arrangements in terms of quality service”.
But the plans have been caused an outcry from the public and unions, as well as Hackney Council, which wrote a strongly-worded response to the consultation stating its concerns over safety and the loss of counters for Oyster services.
The move would affect 51 stations across the capital. In Hackney it would hit Dalston Kingsland, Dalston Junction, Haggerston, Hoxton, Shoreditch High Street, Homerton, Hackney Wick, Clapton, Rectory Road, Stamford Hill and Stoke Newington.
But the Gazette understands LTW has recommended “the majority” in Hackney should stay open. A final decision will now be made by the Department for Transport.
