Hackney’s new top cop is set to start his beat on Tuesday (April 10) after the departure of the previous borough commander, who left the post at the beginning of the year.

Det Chief Supt Matthew Horne, who is currently working at the Met’s Specialist Crime Directorate for the Leveson inquiry, which is investigating the practises of the British press, is no stranger to Hackney because he worked as a Detective Sergeant in the borough 12 years ago.

He will be replacing the temporary borough commander, acting Chief Supt Rob Jones, who has been filling in for Chief Supt Steve Bending after he left the post to set up a London-wide gangs’ taskforce.

Det Chief Supt Horne said: “I look forward to the opportunity to continue the excellent work of my predecessors Steve Bending and Rob Jones.

“Hackney is a diverse and vibrant community, which I will be striving to make an even safer place in which to live, work or visit.”
