A community scheme producing vegetables in the heart of Hackney, and a restaurant providing training for the long-term unemployed in the borough, were celebrated in the 2012 Observer Food Monthly awards.
Growing Communities veg box scheme in Stoke Newington, which is run by volunteers and produces most of its food locally, was named Retailer of the Year for the prestigious award, which included chef Angela Hartnett on the judging panel.
Meanwhile, the Shoreditch Trust’s Waterhouse restaurant in Orsman Road walked away with the Best Ethical Restaurant runner-up award.
