A campaign is underway to save the organic Stocks Farm in Essex, which supplies Hackney’s farmers’ market run by Growing Communities.

Stocks Farm has sold meat for the last 10 years at the market in Stoke Newington which is run by social enterprise Growing Communities.

But a poor apple harvest last year combined with high feed and fuel prices mean Chris and Iain Learmonth are considering giving up their organic livestock and apple farm in Wiston if they cannot increase sales.

“This campaign isn’t just about saving one family farm but it’s also about the future of farming and food production in the UK,” said Kerry Rankine, assistant director at Growing Communities.

“Do we really want meat production to be done only on an industrial scale – with the hazards that brings – and for farming just to be the preserve of giant corporations, millionaires and ex-pop stars?” she asked.

The farmers’ market opens every Saturday from 10am to 2.30pm, in Stoke Newington High Street, and Growing Communities is encouraging people to buy some produce from the farm.
