Hackney teenagers demonstrated “positive youth action” by spending the weekend getting their hands dirty while giving a Homerton park a much needed facelift.

The 100 young people from volunteering group Young Hackney Volunteers gave up their time to clear, weed, litter pick and make homes for rare stag beetles in Daubeny Green.

They also cleared the garden at the Vietnamese, Lao and Cambodian centre in Whiston Road, where they planted shrubs and hundreds of tulips.

Ben Koh, 16, said: “This gives a positive image of young people, especially after recent events – this is an opportunity to show we are not all rowdy and rebellious and can give back to the community”.

The project which is run by CSV (Community Service Volunteers) has been given a two-year grant by the council.

Project manager Mirabai Ruskin, said: “Each month I am amazed at what young people can achieve, not only in terms of bringing about positive action but also the growth they experience themselves.

“I’ve met some truly inspiring young people whose passion and drive to make a difference is a credit to all young people who should not be underestimated.”
