New rapid charging points for electric cars are set to be installed in Hackney in order to encourage vehicle owners to become more green.
The six electric vehicle charging points, which charge batteries from 0 per cent to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes, are being installed across the borough thanks to a £220,000 grant from the government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV).
Hackney currently have 15 public charging points which take about four hours to fully charge a vehicle.
The new charging points will be available to the public 24 hours per day, providing a cheaper travel cost per mile than a petrol/diesel vehicle and making electric vehicles an attractive option for residents and businesses.
Cllr Feryal Demirci, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “I’m very pleased Hackney has been able to secure this funding. Installing more charging points will encourage more of Hackney’s residents and businesses to switch to electric vehicles. Compared to petrol and diesel vehicles, electric vehicles are cheaper to run and better for local air quality.”
