Hackney Council has praised the 100,000 Hackney Weekend festival goers for helping to make it the greenest Radio 1 event ever.
To reduce the environmental impact of the pop party - which saw performances from global superstars like Jay Z and Rihanna - almost 1,000 bins were placed on Hackney Marshes, and 64 per cent of the generated waste was recycled. The target was 40 per cent.
This meant the cleaning up costs were reduced by more than 3,000 through not sending recyclable waste to landfill.
The council was unable to confirm the final bill for cleaning up the site.
